The NEW "Magenta Galactica" Dharma Fiber Reactive Dye Color

January 18, 2022 0 Comments

INTRODUCTION

In 2020, Dharma Trading Co. released a new shade of blue, called Bluebird, to their permanent collection of dye colors. And now, most recently for 2021, they've released a brand new shade of pink, named Magenta Galactica!

Naturally, being the tie dye junkie that I am, I couldn't resist snagging a pound for myself as soon as I saw this new option casually listed amidst the usual lineup of colors!
And now that I've had some time to dig in and do some tie (and ice!) dyeing with Magenta Galactica, I'm thrilled to share my first impressions and overall thoughts and observations about this new color!

UNBOXING & FIRST IMPRESSION

Upon opening my jar of Magenta Galactica for the very first time, the appearance of the powder was nothing to write home about. It looks very similar to Razzle Dazzle, Raspberry, or even ever so slightly similar to Hot Hibiscus in their powder forms.
When mixing it for the first time, at first it looked a lot like Red Violet but with a bit more of an intense hot pink undertone to it.
It was only once I rinsed out my mixing cup that I got really excited, the diluted dye swirling in the sink was the most vibrant, perfect purply-pink
— almost exactly what I imagined Magenta Galactica would look like!

SAMPLE SWATCHES ON 100% COTTON

First things first, how does it actually look on fabric, in natural lighting? How does it compare to the digitized color card rendition? Well, here's how my swatches on 100% cotton squares turned out:

HOW DOES IT ICE DYE?

Here's the results of an ice dyed sample featuring only Magenta Galactica:

WHAT DYE COLOR(S) IS MAGENTA GALACTICA MOST SIMILAR TO? HOW'S IT LOOK COMPARED SIDE-BY-SIDE TO DHARMA'S OTHER FUCHSIA / PINK SHADES?

Compared to some other dye colors that might be considered in the same realm of berry / hot pink / fuchsia type of shades, Magenta Galactica is, in my opinion, most similar to Amethyst. Or, I'd also describe it as a more vivid version of Razzle Dazzle with a touch of Dragonfruit.
To be real, though, my very first thought when I laid my eyes on the fabric square samples was: it looks like exactly the same shade as Barney the dinosaur! — Wait, so does that technically make it a purple!? I dunno, but I do consider it the perfect purply-pink hybrid of both!

A NOD TO THE NEWEST ADDITIONS

In honor of the two most recently released fiber reactive dye colors, I dyed a few different designs showcasing both Bluebird & Magenta Galactica!

The [Size Medium] Psychedelic Mindscape ice dye tee (pictured below) boasts Bluebird and Magenta Galactica as the primary, focal colors of the design — But also features a decent dose of earthy neutral shades to create contrast, along with hints of varying blue and pink shades to amplify the kaleidoscopic, dimensional appearance thats hallmark to all abstract, symmetrical mindscape designs.

Meanwhile, the geode pattern tie dye bandanas pictured below consist of only Bluebird and Magenta Galactica!

These bandanas are both available here & here! ($9 each + shipping)

FINAL THOUGHTS

On a scale of 1 to 5 stars (five being the best), I personally award Magenta Galactica a 5/5!
This is because of the rich, intense, smooth and consistent color it produces as a liquid dye. Also due to the fact it really is a distinctly unique color, unlike any other currently available. While on the other hand, some dye colors can be incredibly similar to one another, like Raspberry vs. Razzle Dazzle, or Lapis and Brilliant Blue, for example.

When it comes to ice dyeing,  I’d also rate ability and the overall color it produces a 5/5, even despite the fact the dye powder is a bit on the denser side, making it a bit more tricky to sprinkle evenly. That seems to be a standard characteristic amongst nearly all of the deep, intensely vibrant or dark dye colors, in my experience, though.

CONCLUSION

Well, that's all I've got for my first thoughts and impressions and overall review of the brand new fiber reactive dye color, Magenta Galactica! You can find it available for purchase on the Dharma Trading Co. website.
I'm interested to know - if you've tried it already, what do you think of Magenta Galactica? If not, did this post make you feel any more or less compelled to add it to your dye collection? Let me know in the comments below!
