What's Been Dyeing in the Dungeon of Design? #1 | This Unfinished, Fossilizing Blog Post - That's what!

December 30, 2021 0 Comments

Update at the time of publishing — This here is a blog post that I never quite fully finished and as a result, never published. Hence the title, it's quite literally full of fossilized, out-dated, old content that spans from the end of this past summer into fall.

So why am I posting this now? A blog thats featured image is full-blown Halloween themed — just after Christmas!?

Because I'll be damned if I allow yet another thing go incomplete; be put on pause,  forever floating in the purgatory of my priorities. Not quite out of sight, out of mind, but rather, seemingly permanently floating in the peripheries of my daily to-do's.

So, that's why. With yet another New Year quickly approaching, I've decided to tie up the loose ends as much as is possible, and just throw this shit up...for the sake of (attempting to) start anew when it comes to my worst trait of all: Starting 99 things, but never finishing one!
With that being said, this blog post is, like the title says, essentially unfinished. The content is a little scattered, there's really no rhyme or reason to the sequence of the sections featured.
Like I mentioned, my purpose for publishing this outdated ass blog is selfish, really — essentially performing a content dump for the sake of decluttering my own mind. I only say this to emphasize: The future editions of WBDITDOD will be much more organized and concise — I promise!

INTRODUCTION

Hey there! Now that I've finished (most of) the site design tweaks and changes I've had in the works for...far too long...I'm excited to finally begin putting many longtime ideas in motion, one of which is to start curating and publishing blog style content on a more regular basis.

Kicking it off with this first ever edition of, What's Been Dyeing in the Dungeon of Design?, an ongoing seasonal (or possibly even monthly) blog series designed to encapsulate and showcase my recent creations and current endeavors, and sneak peeks at projects in progress, all-in-one place!

#MINDSCAPEMONDAY

A 'lil something to brighten every Monday: a brand new batch of Psychedelic Mindscapes!
Now that we're well into Autumn, plenty of Long Sleeve Shirts will be included in the weekly design drops as well. But, no need to wait and check back each week in hopes that your desired combination of colors just so happens to manifest itself in your size; because Custom Order Requests are always welcome!

SOME OF MY RECENT FAVORITE MINDSCAPES

This Size Large Aquascape Tee (pictured below) is one of many recently made mindscapes. Though, this one in particular was actually inspired by one of my first-ever attempts at a symmetrical mindscape design back in 2016-2017! (pictured right)

But my all-time favorite in recent months was this other tee (pictured left) made alongside the one pictured above. See them both while they were in-the-making below!

CUSTOM ICE-DYED SPIRAL TEES

Here's just a few of many recently requested rainbow ice dye spirals (pictured above, left & below).

Pictured below: (3) recently made rainbow ice dye confetti Gildan SoftStyle v-necks, all in size adult XL — two of which are still available! (Here & here)

CUSTOM DYED TANK TOPS

Next up: Three custom Gildan Heavy Cotton men's tank tops, two of which were geode designs (my personal fav!) The additional Jade Agate Geode Tank Top (far left) I made just for the hell of it and gave the buyer first pick between the two - something I like to do once in a blue moon, just when I have the extra time to make a second of some of the made-to-order designs more susceptible to slightly more variance between each finished piece.

Meanwhile, the third tank requested was a psychedelic mindscape (pictured below). This particular design tends to produce the most unpredictable results that are challenging to intentionally replicate similarly, more often than not.

But I really surprised myself with how "closely" I nailed this one (pictured right: original design on the left,  recreation on the right). The tank it was inspired by is this same exact Men's XL Tank Top (pictured below)

RETRO TACO BELL INTERIOR INSPIRED TEE

Here's how my recent attempt at tie-dyeing a Taco Bell tee, inspired by the interior colors of a retro 1990's Taco Bell dining room.

Turns out, this shirt has some bizarre faux-screen-printing material on it that's not quite regular screen-print, but sorta feels half-fused with the cotton itself and thus the dye penetrated through the graphics as well. No big deal though, just a lesson learned.

A HIPPIE HOODIEWEEN IN THE DUNGEON OF DESIGN

Here's a wee little peek at the Halloween decorations that went up in the tie dye studio this year. I'm bummed I didn't get around to capturing more fall and Halloween themed content this past season.

Instead, I was laser-focused on batching as much fig-tree-photography as humanely possible before ♬ the most miserable time of the year ♬ made it's arrival (aka when it loses its leaves for winter).

On the bright side, I'm grateful for having much more time to cherish it this year — it stayed going strong til November, nearly an entire month longer than last year! I'm already eagerly awaiting it's next annual appearance, though.

NEW CARD DESIGN + EVERY INTERNATIONAL ORDER RECEIVES A POSTCARD!

Something I love to do for every international package is include a postcard or two! It's mind-bending to ponder that some of the tie dye I make with my own two hands, in my little makeshift basement studio, travels to destinations around the world that I can only dream of being able to visit one day — So, I like to think my fellow tie dye lovers that show support from across the globe just might enjoy a postcard from the place their tie dye came from!

This past summer, I re-stocked my postcard stash with a whole lot of new ones, have a peek! (pictured right)

On a similar note, I cannot believe these are now my ninth series of business cards! Where's the time going!? Despite the logo in the bottom corner being essentially illegible, this is still my favorite design yet, personally.
(Though, my opinion doesn't count for much considering: I've DIY-ed every single one of my past and present card designs, graphics and logos all *~bY mUhSeLf~*. So, duh, of course I thought each one was the best ever yet /s).
A stroll down memory lane says otherwise and makes for a big ol' dose of cringe with a side of some cackles...
(Yeah, yeah..Not too shabby for being all 100% DIY. But let's be real, they're still far from professional looking — and much less awesome than I thought they were way back when, at the time each was made).
This most recent card design features an up-close shot of this same tee (also pictured left). I was captivated by the unintentional mushroom-like shape and so felt compelled to somehow freeze it in time; capture it in a way that I could keep it forever, while still sharing the physical shirt itself with someone else out there in the world who it's destined to belong to!

R.I.P. MY FAVORITE TANK TOP

My all-time favorite tank top came to be as a result of my first-ever experimental bleach dye batch about two years ago. Everything else was a total dud except for this one gem that I couldn't resist keeping for myself!

Well, it sure got its fair share of wear. Then, it decided to tear. The thought of parting with this design I simply couldn't bear, so I had it put on a set of coasters that I now use for glassware.

AND THAT'S GONNA WRAP UP PART ONE OF "WHAT'S BEEN DYEING IN THE DUNGEON OF DESIGN LATELY?"

Stay tuned for the next installment of this new, regular blog series: What's Been Dyeing in the Dungeon of Design?
The second-ever Dyecember (December) edition will take a mini tour of the tie dye studio's Christmas decorations, gifts I made and gave this year, and of course, some of the cool custom commissions created since the time of this post and much more!
